Reserves

Selected textbooks and other course-related materials are kept on reserve behind the circulation desk.  Ask for at the Library Desk for assistance retrieving the materials you need.

Reserve books may be checked out for two hours for library use only.  Most reserve materials may also be checked out of the library two hours before closing and are due one hour after opening the next day. Fines of $1.00/hour are charged for overdue reserve items.

Holds may not be placed on Reserve items online, however users waiting for a book that is in Library Use, may request that the Library Desk "page them' when that book is returned to the desk. Paging is done on a first come, first serve basis, but requesters must remain in the Matas library for this service to be available.

Reserve Policy:
Material which is required reading for a course in the Schools of Medicine or Public Health may be put on reserve. Required textbooks are not automatically purchased by the library, but are purchased as requested by Faculty.  Please notify the Matas LIbrary when required texts are changed.  The faculty is strongly encouraged to notify the library of all required textbook titles and may request that the library purchase these for student use.

In addition, the faculty is encouraged to request additional materials that support the curriculum in their area of expertise. These materials improve the library's general coverage and support independent student and faculty research.

1. Only instructors or their assistants may request item placement for Course Reserve.

2. Please submit Lists for Course Reserve in advance of the date that the materials must be ready.   The Library requires at least ten days to make sure the materials are available and processed as needed.  If the Library is not notified in advance the materials may be checked out and unavialable in a timely manner or may not be purchase and processed in time for the assignment.

3. If the library does not own the material requested, the instructor may provide a departmental or personal copy for reserve. Multiple copies of any item are discouraged due to space constraints. Although the library will use measures to insure the safety and security of such items, the library will not be held responsible for the loss, theft, or damage to non-library material.

4. Non-book materials (pamphlets, reprints, photocopies, etc.) are generally not kept on reserve by the Matas Library.   Faculty are encouraged to use the MyTulane system to comply with copyright law. The Matas Library neither scans nor duplicates materials for student use.  Final decisions regarding copyright law are left to the Library Director.

5. Print journals may not be placed on reserve.

6. Materials borrowed from another library may not be placed on reserve.

7. When the course is over, non-library material may be picked up by instructors or may be returned to them through campus mail. Library material will be taken off reserve and returned to the stacks. In either case, statistics on usage of reserve items will be sent to the course instructor whenever possible.
